That is where I reside...the edge of nowhere. In the winter, the solitude is often overwhelming. Before my FWB moved away, there was at least times where I could brave the harsh weather conditions and get a cozy hotel room for us to keep each other warm and occupied. When I went down to her small town, we'd stay at this hotel which was being renovated, which meant a good rate. We were often the only ones there, and the manager always gave me the nicest room with a King size bed and jacuzzi. I'd normally get there first, get settled in, and she would arrive shortly after. We'd have a great "Round 1" before cleaning up and heading to dinner. After dinner and a soak in the jacuzzi, round 2 would commence, then cuddling, round 3, sleep and then one of us would wake up around 4AM and get the other going for yet another round. This was our escape once a week. If lucky, twice.
But these days there's no reason to brave the cold and shitty road conditions except to go into work. I've tried searching for a replacement, but this part of the state is farm land and frozen lakes. I think the common thing they do here is cheat on their spouses. At least that's the gossip I constantly overhear. I live in a 55+ building, and there's nothing going on here either. There's maybe 2 ladies in here close to my age I'd consider, and one even flirts with me...but everyone here is a nosey watchdog type. Hell, my neighbor knows everybody's business, so no fun will be had around here.
So, I sit and stare out the window, shop online, drink coffee and read blogs. Once May hits, it's time for my travel season. Enjoy the view from my patio I captured this morning:

Beautiful. Your town sounds like our town - gossipy. We live on 10 acres that is 5 miles out of town. My stepbrother is to the east of us, another brother is 1/2 mile behind us. Lovely quietness.
There are other plusses I didn't mention...I see the Northern lights a good bit, and even this morning on the way to breakfast I saw a bald eagle fly by.
As beautiful as the view is, I can imagine how cold it can get.
I live in a resort town but most expats live in the city, which is an hour’s train ride away.
After reading that, now I'm realllly missing that time when my lover lived an hour away! <3
I get to missing it (her) as well, but there were drawbacks for sure (sometimes the road conditions were brutal for that 1 hour drive), and in two years, she came my way less than a handful of times. It got to be pretty expensive over time. Where I live, EVERYone is an hour away. Plus it's a smaller twon/community and everyone knows everyone elses business.

It gets really bad when the temps reach sub zero, and the winds top 35MPH. Ugh.
That's a great view from your patio. Have you considered moving?
I'd love to, but the wife has gotten herself stuck in a salary cap of sorts. Going to be hard to match the money she makes. I told her it doesn't matter if we're always depressed and wanting something different. (Oh, and I can retire at any time)
